Strategic Planning Facilitation

Clarity for Care Ring, and Health for Charlotte

The Lee Institute was honored to support one of our region’s healthcare leaders by designing and facilitating Care Ring’s 2013 strategic planning process.

The Lee team began the six-month initiative with extensive stakeholder research to understand Care Ring’s rapidly changing environment, the potential implications of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Medicaid expansion, and the strengths and opportunities of Care Ring’s three primary programs. After conducting more than 30 individual stakeholder interviews, three focus groups and independent research, Lee facilitated meetings of both the strategic planning committee and the full board of directors, all driving toward new clarity about Care Ring’s mission-critical programs, its response to the ACA, and its goals and strategies for future growth.

The Lee Institute coordinated and facilitated a process that helped us understand our strengths, acknowledge our limitations, but most importantly prepare strategically to achieve our mission and make a difference in Charlotte. Lee's expert facilitators served as trusted, critical friends—helping us see our potential and prepare for the coming years.
— Don Jonas Ph.D., Executive Director, Care Ring

As a result of the strategic plan, Care Ring already has expanded its nationally-acclaimed Nurse Family Partnership program, increasing the number of nurses and number of low-income mothers served by more than 50%. Its Physicians Reach Out program, which matches low-income patients with doctors providing pro bono care, recently surpassed $100 million in free care given to Charlotte neighbors over the last decade. And its Low-Cost Clinic continues to provide an essential piece of the medical safety net, serving as a welcoming medical home for more than 3,000 patients each year.
